It was a challenge for me to select one favorite post as there are several that rank high for me, including the many Member Spotlights. After much thought I selected the post on the Principles of Advancing Healthcare Equity in Greater Louisville. While this post was written early in the year, later in the year the 2022 Board of Directors coalesced around an updated mission statement and created a vision statement for the KHC. The KHC’s vision is a more equitable system for health where all people in Kentucky and Southern Indiana have access to high quality and affordable healthcare. The Principles created by the Healthcare Equity Advisory Committee provide a guide for healthcare organizations to address healthcare inequities. High quality and affordable healthcare is paramount to KHC’s work, but without equity, we fail in our mission. In the past year we’ve 18 organizations sign the letter of support committing to implementation of the Principles. Have you signed the letter of support – if not, please consider 2023 your opportunity to sign and begin the journey to ensure a more equitable system for health.
Don’t Let a Good Pandemic Go to Waste: Reflections on the Last Two Years

The time spent at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic often feels like a fever dream – wiping down all of our groceries, bumping elbows, working from home for what we thought would only be two weeks, and attempting to bake bread. In some ways, we reflect on this time fondly as we found comfort and bonded in our collective experience. In this blog post, Stephanie Clouser brilliantly ties in these surface level impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic with the deep rooted problems that it exposed in our society. She writes, “We are at the closest thing to a reset that our healthcare system has seen in recent history, and it’s time we capitalize on that momentum.” Now nearing three years since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, I see the healthcare system and our healthcare partners capitalizing on this momentum. While the road to achieving an equitable system of health through high quality and affordable healthcare remains a long one, the pandemic has forced us to pick up our speed.

As someone who has had a coming of age during COVID-19, trying to catch up and understand the cost of healthcare services is intimidating. One article that I thought provided a good overview for trekking through healthcare costs and learning how to be a smart healthcare consumer and self-advocate is the Transparency Studies and Tools Reveal Variation in Quality, Safety, Price article. The Sage Transparency and Leapfrog Safety Grades provide additional context that most people cannot find. Stephanie has done a wonderful job of providing highlights and an entry way for everyone to understand the tools and how to use them. I have recommended this to friends and family; they have been blown away by the information provided.
