Teachers’ Retirement System of the State of Kentucky

Job Title: Director of Retiree Health Care

Which KHC committees have you participated in? Board of Directors

Jane Gilbert is the Director of Retiree Health Care for the Teachers’ Retirement System of the State of Kentucky (TRS) and has served TRS retirees since April 2002. She manages two retiree health plans covering 48,000 retirees. She also serves as a leader in the areas of health insurance cost containment, project management, risk management and federal health care solutions.

What are you currently working on that you are most excited about? How do you think it will drive improvements to health and healthcare in the community?

I am most excited about the Teachers’ Retirement System of Kentucky pharmacogenomics program that has proven successful in determining what drugs will be appropriately metabolized by an individual retiree. This knowledge allows both patients and health plans to cut back on the wasteful trial and error method of prescribing and improve outcomes.

What are you most excited about working on in the future around health and healthcare improvement?

I am most excited about the use of personalized medicine diagnostic tools now and in the future that will help to determine if a patient will benefit from five more years of an estrogen blocker with breast cancer or will benefit from continued chemotherapy for small cell lung cancer.

Why do you and your organization belong to the KHC? Why do you think a multi-stakeholder coalition like the KHC is needed in the community?

What do you find most valuable as a member? I think our President and CEO, Jenny Goins, has said it best. It will take a collaboration of all the different Kentucky and community healthcare stakeholders to resolve health care issues going forward.

What is your favorite quote?

“I am a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it.” Thomas Jefferson

What are you passionate about?

I am passionate and thankful to have my 26-year old nephew, William, in my life. He is autistic, and he is the happiest person that I know. If I could put him in a bottle, I would drink him up.
