The Healthcare Equity Advisory Committee was convened to address racism within healthcare in Louisville, KY. Among calls for racial justice in the summer of 2020, the Kentuckiana Health Collaborative recognized the need to catalyze the healthcare system to prevent its own perpetuation of this issue and heal the harm that has been done.
The Kentucky Nurses Association and Have a Heart Clinic also recognized this need and all three organizations coalesced around shared priorities. Together, these organizations saw a need to bring community members and organizations together to develop a direct call to action to healthcare organizations in Greater Louisville. To fulfill this need, the Healthcare Equity Advisory Committee was formed.
The Committee consists of 25 health equity advocates representing a variety of healthcare stakeholder perspectives including providers, payers, purchasers, academia, and community organizations. Through a series of meetings from October 2021 to February 2022, the Committee reached consensus on eight principles to advance healthcare equity in Louisville. The Committee calls upon healthcare organizations in Louisville to sign a letter of support for the internal implementation of the principles.
